  7. doccano is an open source text annotation tool for humans. It provides annotation features for text classification, sequence labeling and sequence to sequence tasks. So, you can create labeled data for sentiment analysis, named entity recognition, text summarization and so on. Just create a project, upload data and start annotating. You can build a dataset in hours.
  8. ## Demo
  9. You can try the [annotation demo](http://doccano.herokuapp.com).
  10. ![Demo image](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/doccano/doccano/master/docs/images/demo/demo.gif)
  11. ## Features
  12. - Collaborative annotation
  13. - Multi-language support
  14. - Mobile support
  15. - Emoji  support
  16. - Dark theme
  17. - RESTful API
  18. ## Usage
  19. Three options to run doccano:
  20. - pip(Python 3.8+)
  21. - Docker
  22. - Docker Compose
  23. - production
  24. - development
  25. For docker and docker compose, you need to install the following dependencies:
  26. - [Git](https://git-scm.com)
  27. - [Docker](https://www.docker.com)
  28. - [Docker Compose](https://docs.docker.com/compose)
  29. ### pip installation
  30. To install doccano, simply run:
  31. ```bash
  32. pip install doccano
  33. ```
  34. After installation, run the following commands:
  35. ```bash
  36. # Initialize database.
  37. doccano init
  38. # Create a super user.
  39. doccano createuser --username admin --password pass
  40. # Start a web server.
  41. doccano webserver --port 8000
  42. ```
  43. In another terminal, run the following command:
  44. ```bash
  45. # Start the task queue to handle file upload/download.
  46. doccano task
  47. ```
  48. Go to <http://127.0.0.1:8000/>.
  49. By default, sqlite3 is used for the default database. If you want to use PostgreSQL, install the additional dependency:
  50. ```bash
  51. pip install 'doccano[postgresql]'
  52. ```
  53. Create an .env file with variables in the following format, each on a new line:
  54. ```bash
  55. POSTGRES_USER=doccano
  56. POSTGRES_PASSWORD=doccano
  57. POSTGRES_DB=doccano
  58. ```
  59. Then, pass it to docker run with the --env-file flag:
  60. ```bash
  61. docker run --rm -d \
  62. -p 5432:5432 \
  63. -v postgres-data:/var/lib/postgresql/data \
  64. --env-file .env \
  65. postgres:13.3-alpine
  66. ```
  67. And set `DATABASE_URL` environment variable:
  68. ```bash
  69. # Please replace each variable.
  70. DATABASE_URL=postgres://${POSTGRES_USER}:${POSTGRES_PASSWORD}@localhost:5432/${POSTGRES_DB}?sslmode=disable
  71. ```
  72. Now run the command as before:
  73. ```bash
  74. doccano init
  75. doccano createuser --username admin --password pass
  76. doccano webserver --port 8000
  77. # In another terminal.
  78. # Don't forget to set DATABASE_URL
  79. doccano task
  80. ```
  81. ### Docker
  82. As a one-time setup, create a Docker container as follows:
  83. ```bash
  84. docker pull doccano/doccano
  85. docker container create --name doccano \
  86. -e "ADMIN_USERNAME=admin" \
  87. -e "ADMIN_EMAIL=admin@example.com" \
  88. -e "ADMIN_PASSWORD=password" \
  89. -p 8000:8000 doccano/doccano
  90. ```
  91. Next, start doccano by running the container:
  92. ```bash
  93. docker container start doccano
  94. ```
  95. To stop the container, run `docker container stop doccano -t 5`.
  96. All data created in the container will persist across restarts.
  97. Go to <http://127.0.0.1:8000/>.
  98. ### Docker Compose
  99. You need to clone the repository:
  100. ```bash
  101. git clone https://github.com/doccano/doccano.git
  102. cd doccano
  103. ```
  104. _Note for Windows developers:_ Be sure to configure git to correctly handle line endings or you may encounter `status code 127` errors while running the services in future steps. Running with the git config options below will ensure your git directory correctly handles line endings.
  105. ```bash
  106. git clone https://github.com/doccano/doccano.git --config core.autocrlf=input
  107. ```
  108. Then, create an `.env` file with variables in the following format(see [./config/.env.example](https://github.com/doccano/doccano/blob/master/config/.env.example)):
  109. ```plain
  110. # platform settings
  111. ADMIN_USERNAME=admin
  112. ADMIN_PASSWORD=password
  113. ADMIN_EMAIL=admin@example.com
  114. # rabbit mq settings
  115. RABBITMQ_DEFAULT_USER=doccano
  116. RABBITMQ_DEFAULT_PASS=doccano
  117. # database settings
  118. POSTGRES_USER=doccano
  119. POSTGRES_PASSWORD=doccano
  120. POSTGRES_DB=doccano
  121. ```
  122. #### Production
  123. After running the following command, access <http://0.0.0.0/>.
  124. ```bash
  125. docker-compose -f docker-compose.prod.yml --env-file ./config/.env.example up
  126. ```
  127. #### Development
  128. After running the following command, access <http://127.0.0.1:3000/>. If you want to use the admin site, please access <http://127.0.0.1:8000/admin/>.
  129. ```bash
  130. docker-compose -f docker-compose.dev.yml --env-file ./config/.env.example up
  131. ```
  132. You can run the the test codes for the backend with the following command:
  133. ```bash
  134. docker exec doccano_backend_1 python backend/manage.py test api
  135. ```

  149. ## Contribution
  150. As with any software, doccano is under continuous development. If you have requests for features, please file an issue describing your request. Also, if you want to see work towards a specific feature, feel free to contribute by working towards it. The standard procedure is to fork the repository, add a feature, fix a bug, then file a pull request that your changes are to be merged into the main repository and included in the next release.
