  7. doccano is an open-source text annotation tool for humans. It provides annotation features for text classification, sequence labeling, and sequence to sequence tasks. You can create labeled data for sentiment analysis, named entity recognition, text summarization, and so on. Just create a project, upload data, and start annotating. You can build a dataset in hours.
  8. ## Demo
  9. Try the [annotation demo](http://doccano.herokuapp.com).

  11. ## Documentation
  12. Read the documentation at <https://doccano.github.io/doccano/>.
  13. ## Features
  14. - Collaborative annotation
  15. - Multi-language support
  16. - Mobile support
  17. - Emoji  support
  18. - Dark theme
  19. - RESTful API
  20. ## Usage
  21. There are three options to run doccano:
  22. - pip (Python 3.8+)
  23. - Docker
  24. - Docker Compose
  25. ### pip
  26. To install doccano, run:
  27. ```bash
  28. pip install doccano
  29. ```
  30. By default, SQLite 3 is used for the default database. If you want to use PostgreSQL, install the additional dependencies:
  31. ```bash
  32. pip install 'doccano[postgresql]'
  33. ```
  34. and set the `DATABASE_URL` environment variable according to your PostgreSQL credentials:
  35. ```bash
  36. DATABASE_URL="postgres://${POSTGRES_USER}:${POSTGRES_PASSWORD}@${POSTGRES_HOST}:${POSTGRES_PORT}/${POSTGRES_DB}?sslmode=disable"
  37. ```
  38. After installation, run the following commands:
  39. ```bash
  40. # Initialize database.
  41. doccano init
  42. # Create a super user.
  43. doccano createuser --username admin --password pass
  44. # Start a web server.
  45. doccano webserver --port 8000
  46. ```
  47. In another terminal, run the command:
  48. ```bash
  49. # Start the task queue to handle file upload/download.
  50. doccano task
  51. ```
  52. Go to <http://127.0.0.1:8000/>.
  53. ### Docker
  54. As a one-time setup, create a Docker container as follows:
  55. ```bash
  56. docker pull doccano/doccano
  57. docker container create --name doccano \
  58. -e "ADMIN_USERNAME=admin" \
  59. -e "ADMIN_EMAIL=admin@example.com" \
  60. -e "ADMIN_PASSWORD=password" \
  61. -v doccano-db:/data \
  62. -p 8000:8000 doccano/doccano
  63. ```
  64. Next, start doccano by running the container:
  65. ```bash
  66. docker container start doccano
  67. ```
  68. Go to <http://127.0.0.1:8000/>.
  69. To stop the container, run `docker container stop doccano -t 5`. All data created in the container will persist across restarts.
  70. If you want to use the latest features, specify the `nightly` tag:
  71. ```bash
  72. docker pull doccano/doccano:nightly
  73. ```
  74. ### Docker Compose
  75. You need to install Git and clone the repository:
  76. ```bash
  77. git clone https://github.com/doccano/doccano.git
  78. cd doccano
  79. ```
  80. _Note for Windows developers:_ Be sure to configure git to correctly handle line endings or you may encounter `status code 127` errors while running the services in future steps. Running with the git config options below will ensure your git directory correctly handles line endings.
  81. ```bash
  82. git clone https://github.com/doccano/doccano.git --config core.autocrlf=input
  83. ```
  84. Then, create an `.env` file with variables in the following format (see [./docker/.env.example](https://github.com/doccano/doccano/blob/master/docker/.env.example)):
  85. ```plain
  86. # platform settings
  87. ADMIN_USERNAME=admin
  88. ADMIN_PASSWORD=password
  89. ADMIN_EMAIL=admin@example.com
  90. # rabbit mq settings
  91. RABBITMQ_DEFAULT_USER=doccano
  92. RABBITMQ_DEFAULT_PASS=doccano
  93. # database settings
  94. POSTGRES_USER=doccano
  95. POSTGRES_PASSWORD=doccano
  96. POSTGRES_DB=doccano
  97. ```
  98. After running the following command, access <http://127.0.0.1/>.
  99. ```bash
  100. docker-compose -f docker/docker-compose.prod.yml --env-file .env up
  101. ```

  115. ## Contribution
  116. As with any software, doccano is under continuous development. If you have requests for features, please file an issue describing your request. Also, if you want to see work towards a specific feature, feel free to contribute by working towards it. The standard procedure is to fork the repository, add a feature, fix a bug, then file a pull request that your changes are to be merged into the main repository and included in the next release.
